Cathedral of the resurrection of Christ, or, as it is also called the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Cathedral, is one of the iconic sights of the city. The temple was consecrated in honor of the Resurrection is located on the Boulevard St. Innocent, which is located at the intersection of streets Komsomol and the Communist prospect.

The place allocated for the construction of the Cathedral was consecrated by Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev), who visited the city in August 1990, However, the construction of the temple began only in 1992, as funding for its construction lacked. The construction of the Cathedral was completed in 1995, the authors of the project of the Cathedral of the resurrection of Christ was made by the architect S. Miscenko and designer of L. Sivkova.

A small domed temple was built in accordance with the traditions of ancient Russian architecture of the Novgorod school. On the territory of the Cathedral was erected tower-belfry. Specially cast for this tower bell weighs one ton. It is possible to see the image of St. innocent of Moscow, which was also the educator of America and the Far East. In the Cathedral there is the lower Church, which was consecrated in the name of the Resurrection.

Over time it became clear that the Cathedral can accommodate up to 450 people, could not accommodate all the parishioners. Therefore, in 2002, began its reconstruction. On the East side in front of the temple was built the bell tower with a graceful dome, which was an octagonal tent, helmet surmounted by a small cupola.

The bell tower and the Church joined the overlap, whereby the Church space has been greatly expanded. The restoration resulted in the building of the Cathedral changed its silhouette. Now the temple is like a white ship with pale blue sails.
