Long market square in Gdansk, which is one of the most famous tourist attractions of the city.

Founded in the 13th century, the area was originally used as a trade route leading to the market. Soon after the bloody takeover of gdaƄsk by the Teutonic knights, the street became the main artery of the city. The official German name Langgasse appeared in 1331, a Polish version of the Dlugi Targ was introduced only in 1552. Before the partition of Poland street was still called the Royal way, because there was held a ceremonial road in town when visiting Gdansk, the Polish monarchs. During the visits of monarchs here, feast, fireworks and festivities. On the street lived the rich people: nobles, merchants, and citizens, occupying an important city positions.

In the 14th and 15th centuries on Saturdays on Long market selling meat, and in the area between the Neptune fountain and the city hall sold live pigs. Here were arranged the executions of witches, heretics and criminals who, however, were noblemen or legal residents. Other executions were carried out elsewhere.

In the late 19th century on Long market appeared the tram tracks, which were removed after the war during reconstruction. During the Second world war the vast majority of buildings in the street were destroyed.

On Long market are: the town Hall, the Neptune fountain, Golden house, Green gate and many other famous architectural monuments of the city.
