On the street of the Holy spirit near the Basilica of the virgin Mary is the most beautiful chapel, named Royal. This temple is unique not only because it was founded by the Polish king Jan III Sobieski in part with funds Primate Andrzej Olszewski. The Royal chapel is the only Baroque Church built on site Glowne Town. Its construction took three years (1678-1681 years) and was associated with the resolution of long-standing conflict between local Catholics and Protestants.
To appear in the Royal chapel Gdansk Lutherans and Catholics attended one Church – the Basilica of the virgin Mary. Catholic mass was held at the main altar, and the Protestant – at the altar of St. Nicholas. But at the end of the XVI century the situation has changed: the Lutherans expelled the Catholics from his temple. Now the adherents of the Catholic faith huddled in Plebaniye of the Holy virgin, as in Polish it was called the parish house, which was erected in 1517-1518, and is famous because it is decorated with the coat of arms of the family of the Ferber family. To remedy the situation for Catholics in the city of Gdansk and built a small chapel, which was richly decorated with stucco floral garlands, the emblem of Poland, the Chase coat of arms and symbol of the Royal family Sobieski.
For the construction of the Royal chapel were demolished five houses down the street of the Holy spirit. The design of the chapel was designed by architect tylman von Gameren, on the interior worked Andreas Schluter, Jr.
The terrible events of the twentieth century led to the partial destruction of the Royal chapel. Church furniture and utensils were lost irretrievably, the Western wall of the Church was damaged by a shell, but the chapel was beyond restoration. Restorers found that almost suffered the most valuable paintings on the vault, dated XIX century. In 1948, the choir again appeared before the citizens in its original form.
