The Grodno regional drama theater was founded in 1947 on the basis of the Bobruisk regional drama theatre, which was temporarily housed in Grodno. Theatre, headed by N. Kovalainen, opened its first season with a premiere of the play by Alexander Ostrovsky's "the Truth is good but happiness is better". The first building, where he worked as a theatrical group was the house Grodno warden A. tizengauza XVIII century.

In the postwar years in Belarus were popular plays of the great Patriotic war. Were in the repertoire and performances of classical drama.

In 1950, the artistic Director of the Grodno drama theatre becomes Director Y. Yurlovsky. Since his arrival in the repertory performances appear on the works of the Belarusian national subjects, as well as productions of plays by contemporary playwrights.

In the 1960-1970-ies repertoire mainly consisted of plays about the revolution, the history of the country.

In 1980 by architect G. Machulskaya was erected a large modern building of brick and reinforced concrete, similar to a crown. The entrance was decorated with a sculptural composition of L. silber. In a new building with two modern comfortable auditorium: large theatre and the balcony seats 700 seats and a small hall of 216 seats on the ground floor.

Recently, the theatre celebrated its 65th anniversary. This momentous event was a Grand theatrical performance honoring creative theatre group.
