Berdyansk lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses of Ukraine, began its work in the distant 1838. The lighthouse was built almost at the end of the Berdyansk spit from specially imported for this stone.

It is noteworthy that for all time of its existence, the appearance of the beacon has not changed. Like many centuries ago, the lighthouse has the appearance of a white octagonal tower with a height of twenty three meters with an orange stripe in the middle. Changed only the technical equipment. In 1889, the lighthouse was equipped with a special steam whistle, beep during heavy fog. In 1922, the lighthouse was the first phone line. And today the lighthouse is equipped with modern electromagnet installation and radio beacon installed at a height of 70 meters. Turn it on if necessary.

The first lighthouse was built on the Berdyansk spit, however, that the court after crawling braids were supposed to move in Berdyansk port is almost without a guide, in 1877 it was decided to build another lighthouse, which is called the upper. And the old lighthouse has been called, respectively, lower. Then as the light source used kerosene lamps, they lit every evening caretakers who lived on the territory of the lighthouse.
