Heraklion was built by the Arabs in the IX century. Then it was called Candia. In the middle ages the Venetians surrounded the city wall with a length of 5 km in the small square in the centre is the beautiful marble fountain, named after the Venetian General Morosini. Also survived several Venetian houses.
The city is proud of rich Archaeological Museum. Here are all the most significant exhibits of the Minoan culture: pottery, stone carving, carved print, sculpture, gold jewelry, metal Handicrafts, beautiful frescoes of the palaces and wealthy houses, and unique stone sarcophagus from Agia Triad.
History Museum displays exhibits from the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods and historical documents of the modern history of Crete. It also presents local folk costumes, woven products, wood carving, embroidery and other items of decorative art.
