The Mamula island presents a small rocky islet with a rounded shape, located near the famous resort of Herceg Novi. Once it was called the Swallow, while in the middle of the 19th century the Governor of the Austro-Hungarian Dalmatia, General Lazar Mamula, it was not built as a defensive fortress to protect the Bay of Kotor from attack from the sea. Since then, the island and there was such a name.
He himself, though not large in size, however, was of great importance due to its strategic location. The island is like locking the entrance to the Bay, and it was decided to use in warfare. He began to function as a defensive Fort.
And in times of both (and the 1st, and 2nd) world wars, the fortress was used as a prison, and glory of this place was bad - there is evidence that prisoners-fighters for free Montenegro, therein, was severely tortured. The fortress is well preserved to our days and is now under state protection as a cultural monument.
Today the island is famous for its city Park, which grows a large number of plants of the tropics and subtropics, including several unique varieties of Mimosa. In the winter time here spend world famous Mimosa Festival, which lasts for a month.
Especially beautiful view of the Bay can be seen from aboard any passing ship. You will notice that all the slopes of the Gulf of Kotor slotted three tunnels for submarines. It was once part of the combat power of Yugoslavia. Submarines got into the tunnels under the water, and the enemy never knew whether they are located inside the Peninsula or had already gone to sea.
Today it looks abandoned and orphaned, although, according to some reports, Montenegro has its own submarine fleet. Boka Kotorska also owns a ship-repair factory.
Now on the island and Fort Mamula also arrange day trips for tourists, travelers and artists, here stop the passing cruise liners. Everyone who comes here, ocharovyvaet its natural beauty, steep rocky cliffs, and the North side of the island offers a beautiful secluded beach.
