The Sullivan Bay is one of the most popular destinations among residents of Hobart, where you can not only relax but also enjoy a variety of sports. The Bay is of importance in the history of Hobart, located on the banks of the river Derwent.
It was here that Lieutenant David Collins in 1804 he founded the first European settlement in Tasmania, which eventually turned into Hobart. Then Collins sailed along the shores of the river Derwent to the island hunter island. Later the island was connected to the shore, today this road is known as street hunter street. Collins also gave the name to the Bay in honor of John Sullivan, Deputy permanent Secretary of the colony. But the local aborigines called the Bay of Nibelungen.
Once in the Bay, Sullivan was located salt factories, slaughterhouses and even landfills, but today it houses Macquarie Wharf, which serves as the main port of Hobart. Interestingly, here are preserved many historic buildings, for example, the school of the Arts University of Tasmania. Some remarkable places in the Bay are in a state of reconstruction – from March 2010 is renovating Parliament Square, which has already cost the city $100 million. Will soon begin renovation of the Museum and Art Gallery of Tasmania, which allocated $350 million. And street brook street is to be transformed into a handy ferry terminal.
