Rock cave Bhimbetka is a truly unique place, situated in the Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, in the district Reisen. Bhimbetka is one of the earliest sources, by which we can judge about the culture and lifestyle of prehistoric man. According to research scientists, some of these caves were used as shelter and housing humanoid homo erectus for another hundred thousand years ago. So, some of the rock paintings found there, there are more than 30 thousand years.
The name of the caves associated with the name of the divine hero Bhima from the famous national epic Mahabharata who was known for his incredible strength. The word "Bhimbetka" derived from "Bhimbetka", which means "place where Bhima".
Cave Bhimbetka located 45 kilometers from Bhopal, the South side of Vindhya mountain range. This whole area is covered with lush vegetation and rich fauna.
Archeologists interested in this place in 1888, thanks to the stories of the local tribes. Later, since the mid-twentieth century, it was studied in greater detail the famous Indian archaeologist Vishnu Sridhar Wakankar. Since then, this area was discovered more than 700 caves, shelters, of which 243 are associated with the group Bhimbetka, and represent amazing caves of various sizes, smooth walls and rounded shape which induced the scientists to think that when this land was under water.
The huge popularity of the cave acquired due to the large number of rock paintings depicting various scenes from the life inhabiting them at the time. For example, there you can see the scene of the child's birth, ritual dances, collecting honey, hunting, "funeral", as well as images of plants and animals.
Rock cave Bhimbetka are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage site.
