The Central area of Izmir, which is called Konak Meydani, located in the southern end of the street Ataturk. It is quite long and stretches right up to the Izmir Bay. Most of the area is occupied by the Central bus station, so it is always crowded. On-site Konak are boat moorings, administrative buildings, cultural centres and hospitals. In nearby shopping areas, you can visit the many shops, souvenir shops and lively restaurants. In recent years, the square was rebuilt and together with the surrounding pedestrian streets turned into the main tourist area of the city.
In the centre of Konak towers 25-metre Clock tower is one of the most important symbols of the city. The clock tower, which is called Saat Kulesi, was built in 1901 by the French architect Raimonda Charles Perret as a gift to the city from the Sultan of Abdulhamid. Large clock that adorns the tower, a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II. The tower is designed in late Ottoman style and oddly enough does not contain any labels.
Near the Governor's mansion on the square is a small octagonal mosque called Ahly, which translated from Turkish means "coastal". The mosque was built in 1754 on the funds Aisha Khanum, the wife of the rich Izmir landowner Khatibzadeh Mehmed Pasha. It's small, but elegant and decorated with colourful ceramic tiles from Kutahya. Tiled mosque turquoise tiled.
Near the square is the Museum of fine arts. In its halls exhibits the work of contemporary Turkish artists. There is also a wonderful Archeological Museum that has ancient history of Izmir. In the basement there are ancient sarcophagi, skilful some beautiful bas-reliefs and sculptures, including statues of Demeter and Poseidon. On the South side of Konak square is the Cultural Center of the Aegean University, which is a complex of buildings with unusual architectural style, which includes music Academy, Opera house, exhibition halls and the Museum of modern art.
Konak square has for many years been the most popular place to meet locals.
