The Harbour Of Sunda Kelapa Photo: The Harbour Of Sunda Kelapa

The harbour of Sunda Kelapa is the old port, which is located at the mouth of the river Čilivung. The name of the river Čilivung in the Indonesian language sounds like "muddy river". This river is the largest river in Jakarta. In a time when the island of Java was colonized by Holland, river Čilivung was important, and the port is an important stop for many trading ships from all over the world. In addition, the river was a source of fresh water for residents. Unfortunately, today, the water Čilivung polluted by industrial and domestic discharges, but despite this, the water remains sufficiently large number of fish, crabs, shrimp and other crustaceans.

The port of Sunda Kelapa in his time was the main port of Sunda Kingdom, which is the beginning the history of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Translated from Sandanska language "Kelapa" is a local variety of a coconut, hence the name of the harbour. In the XIII century, trade was one of the sources of income of the Kingdom of Sunda. It should be noted that the port of Sunda Kelapa was one of the few then-existing ports in Indonesia, which had trade relations with Europe and took their ships.

In 1527 Sunda Kelapa was attacked by troops of the Sultanate of Demak, and soon Sunda Kelapa was renamed Jakarta. Later, the port became part of the Sultanate of bows. During the colonization of Holland near the port was built a new city called Batavia. As the main port it functioned almost to the end of the nineteenth century, until it was built the new port of Tanjung Priok in order to unclog the flow of arriving ships. The new port is located 9 km East of the old port. After Indonesia became independent, the port of Batavia again returned to its original name – Sunda Kelapa as a tribute to the historical past the Harbor, standing at the origins of Jakarta.
