Baba Vida fortress is a Museum, which since ancient times served as a reliable urban consolidation. The fortress is considered a key landmark of Vidin.

Scientists agree that the construction of the fortress began in the X century, however, no specific date has not been found.

Today built two fortified walls and four towers. Historians suggest that the dimensions of the fortifications were once much more than Baba Vida in modern guise. This is due primarily to the fact that the fortress could withstand a siege lasting eight months, when the Byzantine army of Basil II in 1003 attacked a Bulgarian town. The invaders eventually the fortress was conquered and destroyed.

The fortress was rebuilt, when the authorities in Vidin was given to Ivan Sratsimir, one of the king's sons. It allows the Turks to equip the garrison inside the fortress Baba Vida for the sake of the Vidin Principality.

In 1396 the Turks attacked them break the enemies and then the Ottoman Empire robs Sratsimir all the powers and expelled from the city. So Vidin goes into the power of the Turks. During this period, Baba Vida continues to occupy a Central position in many strategic plans not only of the Ottoman Empire and Austria. This leads to conflicts between the two States, seeking to divide the Bulgarian fortress.

After the capture of Bulgaria Austria in 1689, the castle was renovated in accordance with the requirements of the era. However, by the end of the eighteenth century, with the loss of the fortress of defensive value, its premises were used as a prison and a warehouse for supplies and ammunition).

In 1794 Baba Vida once again proved himself as unapproachable and reliable fortress: ruled Vidin Turkish mercenary Osman Asvantage decided to take one-man rule over the city and the region, opposing the Ottoman Empire. The fortress was several times besieged by the Sultan Selim III, but has remained impregnable for his troops.

In 1885, the fortress withstood the last in his lifetime siege by the Serbs. In 1964 the Baba Vida received the status of a monument of culture of Bulgaria.
