One of the most interesting sights of the Greek city of Ioannina, undoubtedly, is the Archaeological Museum. It is located in the heart of the city in the Park Litharitsa.
The Museum building was designed by the famous Greek architect ARIS of Konstantinidis in the 1960-ies. In the summer of 1970 Archaeological Museum opened its doors to visitors. Until the early 90-ies in the Museum was temporarily housed in the collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine era, as well as Greek artists 19-20-th centuries. In the period from 2003 to 2008, the Museum was closed for major renovations.
Today in the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is stored about 3000 unique artifacts collected from all over Epirus and perfectly illustrating the history and development of the culture of this region. The Museum covers a huge time period, from the Paleolithic era until late antiquity. The exhibition area covers approximately 1200 sq. m. main hall, seven rooms and three galleries). The exhibits are divided by thematic and geographical origin and presented in chronological order.
In the Archaeological Museum you can see ceramics, sculpture, statues, funeral steles and other burial artifacts, inscriptions, household utensils, jewelry, tools, an excellent collection of coins and more. Among the most valuable exhibits is worth noting silicon bifas (ax) Acheulian type (lower Paleolithic, about 200,000 BC), a bronze jug from an ancient burial near Vitsa (540-520 years BC), a marble funerary statue in the form of a lion from Michalitsi and bronze helmet from home in Wits (both second half of the 4th century BC), a marble sarcophagus from Ladkani, Thesprotia (2nd century BC), funeral stele of Plaisia (late 3rd – early 2nd century BC), etc. But of particular interest are ancient relics from the sanctuary Dodon – one of the greatest oracles of the ancient world, among them a bronze statuette of a boy with a dove in his left hand (3rd century BC).
