Water fortress, occupying a large plot Central square jeseník, was so named because originally it was surrounded by a deep ditch filled with water. It was built on the site of several ancient towers, Dating from the mid thirteenth century. They were destroyed in the XV century for the construction of a Grand castle, consisting of one floor. The fortress had a rectangular shape and comprised of one wing, in front of which was laid in the yard, and across the moat was spanned sturdy stone bridge, which has been preserved to our days.

The water castle was built in Gothic style and later almost does not change its original appearance. In the early sixteenth century to the castle were added several lateral wings and a small turret, which decreased after the fire, which occurred in 1727. Then the main body of the building was completed and received a second floor. This is the way we see the castle now.

Water fortress was owned by a secular entity, of a local noble family, who eventually lost ownership of the castle. He turned to the Ministers of the Church – bishops and archbishops of Wroclaw. Sometimes they passed the local castle to rent for everyone, but then again returning their property to the Church.

The fortress for a long time was the only fortification of jeseník. The fact that the city had no right to build the city walls, so was open to any enemy.

In 1932 in Water fortress was opened Museum of local lore, who works in it still. In the 80-ies of the last century the castle was renovated, so now looks quite presentable and picturesque.
