Only one of the seven surviving city gates of old königsberg (now Kaliningrad) used nowadays for its intended purpose - the Brandenburg gate.
In 1657 in the South-West of the First rampart fortifications, on the road connecting the Konigsberg castle and Brandenburg (in our days - the village ushakovo), were built Brandenburg gate. Until the mid-eighteenth century the gates were wooden. Over time, the structure fell into disrepair in the late eighteenth century by order of the Prussian king Frederick the Second was replaced by a massive brick fortification building in the Gothic style with high arched openings and side casemates. In 1843, during the restoration, the gates were adorned with decorative gabled pediments, stylized leaves, cross-shaped flowers, medallions and coats of arms. Also at the Brandenburg gate sculptural portraits of war Minister-the reformer of field Marshal Hermann von Boyen, and one of the authors fortifications of Konigsberg - Ernst von Aster, held the position of chief of the engineering corps. The author of the front pack was the architect f.. Styler. Later side casemates, initially serving as sentries booths, were converted into a pedestrian gate. In Soviet times the passages were sealed with brickwork and inside were the shops.
Restored Brandenburg gate is considered a monument of architecture of the eighteenth century and protected by the state. Pass through the gate of the tram tracks and the road paved. From the outside the buildings are well preserved relief images of two Prussian eagles" - basis of Germany and Prussia, and on the part of the city - portrait medallions.
Of the buildings of the old Koenigsberg Brandenburg gate stand out particularly pronounced Gothic motifs: sagittal Gables, giving the height of a small building, and ornate decorative elements.
