In the centre of Kaliningrad, near the Bottom of the pond is the main building of the Museum of history and art, established in August 1946. Originally the Museum was organized as a tourist and had no building of its own, but over the years evolved and formed quite a serious art collection.
In our days, the oldest Museum in the region is located on three floors of a historic building, where 3,500 square metres are eleven exhibition halls and the visitors are more than 120 thousand exhibits. Rich in the collection of the Museum introduces the history, nature, geographical features of the region, as well as art works of Russian and foreign artists. The most valuable collections of the Museum are: the paleontological collection of the Geological Museum of königsberg, a collection of natural specimens of amber, numismatic collection - a collection and a unique collection of reference books on Russian and German languages.
Branches of history and art Museum are: opening of the exhibition "Ruins of the Royal castle," Fort №5, command post of the 43rd Army in the village of Kholmogorova, Museum of Kristijonas Donelaitis in the village of Prudy, a sculpture Park on the Kneiphof island and the Bunker Museum, formerly functioned as the command post of the Koenigsberg fortress.
In 1991, Regional history and art Museum moved into the historic building of the former municipal Stadthalle concert hall, where he is to this day. The concert hall was built in 1912 according to the project of the Berlin architect Richard Seele. During the Second world war the building was destroyed and lay in ruins until the beginning of 1980-ies. In 1986 Stadthalle was restored according to the drawings and specially reconstructed for the Museum.
In addition to sightseeing tours in the Museum organizes thematic lessons and a variety of programs in environmental education, local history and archaeology. Children will be interested in visiting creative activities such as: painting in the style of rock art, sculpture pottery made of clay and participation in archaeological excavations.
