The monument to Ivan Yarygin, located in the city of Krasnoyarsk on the island Recreation near the Sports Palace, is a monument dedicated to the famous Soviet and Russian athlete, freestyle wrestler, two-time Olympic champion and honored master of sports of the USSR Ivan Sergeevich Yarygina.
During his career I. S. Yarygin twice received the status of Olympic wrestling champion and won not only in the Championships of the Soviet Union but also of Europe and the world. In 1972, during the Olympic games in Munich athlete set a record, after winning all their fights no more than 7 minutes 20 seconds. In 1976 in Montreal iarygina managed to win a second Olympic gold medal. Killed Ivan Yarygin October 11, 1997 in a car accident.
The total height of the monument to the famous athlete is about 10 m, and the bronze sculpture is more than 4 m. the Sculpture was made in St. Petersburg. The author of the project was sculptor Vladimir Usov. The sculpture stands on a high pedestal, made of Ural granite. The main initiator of the monument in the city of Krasnoyarsk were the Foundation Yarygin headed by the wife of wrestler Natalya. Organizational matters were decided by the brother of Ivan Yarygin – Alexander.
At the solemn opening of the monument in addition to native Yarygin was attended by the Governor of the region Alexander Lebed, representatives of the government and many well-known athletes. The monument was unveiled on the eve of the annual tournament, which is dedicated to the memory of the famous athlete.
Every year on the birthday of I. S. Yarygin, November 7, coaches of sports schools together with students laying to the monument of flowers.
