Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is located on one of the town squares called Masaryk. This temple is considered the most ancient sacred stone building Kromeriz. It was founded by the knights of Malta and was first mentioned in the Chronicles of 1238. Solid Gothic Cathedral immediately became the most visited temple of Kromeriz. In the XIV century it was rebuilt several times, trying to achieve perfection. Then the funds for the permanent restoration is over, the Cathedral stood for a long time without updating, so gradually began to crumble. Citizens at the General meeting decided that repairing it makes no sense, and it is better to build instead of the new Cathedral. Did destroyed the existing Church and the facade erected a new one in the fashionable Baroque style. It was in 1736-1768 years.
The new Cathedral turned out to be majestic and pompous. It was decorated with two slender towers. Significant reconstructions of the Cathedral no longer worried, so modern tourists can see it just the way it was conceived in the eighteenth century.
Unfortunately, the Cathedral is open only during the masses. The rest of the time on its interior can only be seen from behind the iron grille. Its walls are lined with marble and decorated with precious paintings, which depict scenes from the Holy Scriptures. From NIS to look at the congregation of the saints etched in stone. There in the Cathedral choirs and choir stalls, and traditional authority. In this Church has excellent acoustics, so the music that goes under the arch of the Cathedral, seems particularly beautiful.
Facing the Cathedral, take the time to go into it and look around carefully. On Masaryk square, we can see the gymnasium, where he trained future priests, and the house where lived the clergy.
