The bird sanctuary in Kumarakom Photo: the bird Sanctuary in Kumarakom

The bird sanctuary in Kumarakom, or whatever it is called reserve Vembanad, is a Paradise for avid bird watchers, and lovers of beautiful views and a relaxing holiday. This scenic area is located in the South-West Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of the largest in the state of Vembanad lake and river Cavnar, 14 kilometers from Kottayam town.

The main attraction of Kumarakom is, of course, fauna - a huge number of birds, both sedentary and migratory. Especially numerous species such as the cuckoo, Heron ordinary, egret, cormorant, water hen (also called marsh), maesaka, brahmin background kite, crane, various types of owls and ducks. Also you can watch birds such as parrot, Teal, Venus flytrap, when they arrive for the winter from the Himalayas or Siberia.

In addition to bird watching from the shore, if desired, in the Park you can rent a boat and take a short journey through the waters of Vembanadu or Cavalary.

The most successful and auspicious time for observations is at sunset, when the birds return to their nests, and the time right before sunrise, when they leave them.

Since 2008, WWF-India is organising a special two-day trips to the nature reserve for bird watchers and fans to watch birds. And Corporation for tourism development of Kerala (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) is planning to open in the reserve international centre for bird-watching.
