Near the Turkish city of Kusadasi is a mount Pion, which the locals call Panier Dougie. The height of the mountain is 155 meters and offers great views of the ancient Byzantine wall, surprisingly well preserved. The territory of the mountain Peony belongs to the National Park and therefore the hill is covered with natural vegetation. More than half of the slopes are immersed in a dense thicket of Mediterranean macchia. The Isle is very rare for an Eastern Mediterranean evergreen tree - oak padalily. Its lush and shiny crown with small, smooth leaves can be seen from a distance, because usually the height of this tree is about ten meters. The rest of the flora is a mixture of relatively high cypress and maple trees along with an abundance of plantain, Laurel and oleander. Places meet different kinds of pine.
Under the North-East slope of Panayir Dougie is the famous Cave of the Seven Sleepers. In it, according to legend, seven young men of Ephesus were immured alive in the time of persecution against Christians in the second century. Almost two centuries later they were found alive and healthy, but they remained in a deep sleep. After the earthquake, the passage into the cave was opened and the young men awoke, having slept thus for about 200 years. In this way, God wanted to restore the faith of Christians in a wonderful Sunday. After the death of the young Emperor Theodosius ordered to bury them in the cave and build in their honor pilgrim fortress.
On the Northern slope of mount Pion in the tenth century BC rustled great for those times the city of Ephesus, named after the Amazon Afasie, beloved son of the ruler of Athens. The city quickly became a major trading port and was so rich that not even built fortifications, relying only on the authority of their churches and politicians. The level of the sea in those days was at 57 meters above the modern one, so the city was on the shore of the Aegean sea. Ephesus is the largest and best preserved ancient city in Turkey. Here are beautifully preserved ancient sites: the famous Church of the virgin Mary, the Celsus library, the great Roman theatre, baths, the fountain of Trajan, the Odeon. Another interesting building is the temple of Athena.
