Tatra national Park is a national Park located Tatras in the Malopolska region in southern Poland. The headquarters of the Park is located in Zakopane. Together with the Park located on the North of Slovakia, both of the national Park form a common nature reserve.
The first call to ensure the protection of the Tatra mountains was at the end of the 19th century. In 1925 were taken the first efforts to establish a national Park in cooperation with Slovakia. Formally, a buffer zone was established in 1937. Tatra national Park was founded in 1954 by the decision of the Polish government. It was originally occupied an area of 215, 56 square kilometers, at present, the Park has become a little less - 211, 64 sq. km. Of these, 151, 91 sq km is covered by forests.
In 1992 the Polish and Slovakian national parks in the Tatras jointly received the status of biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
The national Park covers one of the two Alpine mountain ranges in Poland. The landscape consists of sharp peaks and valleys with numerous rock formations. The highest peak in Poland is Rysy is located at a height of 2,499 m above sea level, is located here. The Park has about 650 caves, the longest of which reaches 18 km, and the deep – 814 meters. Six caves are open to tourists. The Park has more than 30 mountain lakes, called Becoming (Pol.: pond). These reservoirs are an important part of the landscape. The largest lake - Sea eye area with 349 000 sqm In Tatranska reserve is a waterfall, with a height of 70 meters.
The main trees of the Park can be called fir, European beech, Norway spruce. Other typical species - Swiss pine, giant crocuses and thistles. The Park is home to chamois and marmots, brown bears and lynxes, wolves and otters.
