The Cathedral of Agia NAPA Photo: Cathedral of Agia NAPA

One of the most famous and visited Orthodox churches of Limassol Cathedral of Agia NAPA is located the center of the upscale residential and shopping district of the city, is a perfect example of the mixture of several architectural styles, as well as Greek and Byzantine ecclesiastical tradition.

The history of the Cathedral began in 1903. It was then that he was designed by the Greek architect Papadakis on the site of an old Byzantine Church that was built in 1740. The large white building of the Cathedral, standing right among the houses, immediately catches the eye. From the outside the temple looks quite simple and restrained, despite the abundance of fine detail – filigree railings, narrow Windows with colored glass, elegant stucco patterns and stone carving. On both sides of the entrance are two large quadrangular tower, and the roof is crowned with a neat cupola. But inside this Cathedral impresses visitors with its magnificent decoration and trim – massive columns, high arches, gilded moldings, bright murals. One of the main values the Cathedral is the icon, which depicts Jesus Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles – it is fully embroidered with silk threads manually and decorated with trimmings of gold lace. Despite the fact that the icon was created not so long ago, but she, like a work of art, has already become quite well-known.

But the most popular among the faithful and tourists, the Cathedral of Agia NAPA has acquired through the relics stored there - the miraculous icon of the virgin Mary and the Belt of the virgin.
