Linkoping Cathedral Photo: Cathedral of linköping

Linköping Cathedral is the Central Church of the local diocese and the second largest Cathedral in Sweden (after the Cathedral in Uppsala). The modern building is over 800 years old, but the history of the Cathedral began much earlier, with the construction on this place in 1000 years, a small wooden Church. The erection of the first stone of the building, according to the sources, was begun in 1120 and was completed in 1140-1150-ies. According to extant documents, in 50 years of the 12th century in the building for some time housed the Synod.

The first building of the Cathedral was a simple Basilica in the Romanesque style, and its dimensions were halved modern Cathedral. At about 1230 years the building was expanded to the East, in the Cathedral there is a new altar, choir and transept, which have been preserved to our days. 20 years later the Cathedral was again increased on the eve of the coronation of king Valdemar of Birgisson. Between 1308 and 1360 years in the time of Bishop Carl extended the nave and West facade built in the style of the Cologne Cathedral. It was then the Cathedral reached its modern proportions. It is likely that at the same time was created and limestone sculpture of St. Peter, the patron Saint of the Church.

In the mid-16th century, the Cathedral was damaged by fire twice, causing the roof was destroyed, moldings and stained glass Windows. In the years immediately before and after 1800 th in the Cathedral there was a lot of restoration work. For example, in 1812, was carried out so-called "great purge" of the interior, which resulted in much of the decorations of the 16th and 17th centuries was destroyed or sold. In 1965-1967, the Cathedral was repaired, and the Church regained the roof and the spire which was removed in the late 18th century.
