The Palace of Grubber, which now houses the national Archives of Slovenia, was built in 1773-1781, according to a project of the Jesuit Gabriel of Grubber. This Palace, which housed an astronomical Observatory was built for the purposes of the School of mechanics and hydraulics Grubber.
The Palace was built in the late Baroque style. For finishing of the facade and the interior plaster in floral style, were involved experienced plasterers. That goes under the dome oval staircase inside the Palace, worth to look at it.
The first floor is a chapel, painted with scenes from the life of the virgin Mary. The painting, dated to the year 1777, is the work of the Austrian artist Johann Martin Schmidt, also known as Kremser Schmidt. Slightly darkened, metaphorical paintings on the domed ceiling above the staircase, depicting trade, art craftsmen and technology, Ljubljana were created by artist Andrew Janez Harlina in 1786.
