The Catholic Church of the sacred Heart in Wimbledon – a huge, very beautiful and wonderfully located on the hill, in the large garden. The surrounding streets are solid shaded greens and small houses. The Gothic Church dominates the area as a monument to centuries.

Actually, the Church opened its doors to the faithful not so long ago, in 1887. At the Church there was founded by artist Edith Arendrup, whose portrait is kept in the local history Museum. Edith settled in Wimbledon, having experienced a tragic loss: the death of her son, her husband (who was a counselor in the Egyptian army), mother, only brother and father. Only deep faith has saved a woman in those days. Educated in the doctrine of Unitarianism, she experienced a deep inward turning, turning to Catholicism. Positioning means, Edith decided to bring the true faith of the Protestant population of Wimbledon. The first chapel she discovered in her own house, and then bought land to build a large Church and partially financed the project.

The design of the Church has created a young Scottish architect Frederick Arthur Walters. The nave of the new Church was opened on June 17, 1887, the feast of the sacred Heart of Jesus. But after that, the construction continued for another fourteen years: the first sanctuary and the southern pass was opened in 1895, the North aisle and a vestry – in 1898. By this time the building was experiencing financial difficulties, but she has a new benefactor, a wealthy widow Caroline Curry. It was she who paid for the construction of the North aisle and chapel, dedicated to St. Ignatius.

The appearance here of the chapel of St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuit order, not by chance: the founder of the Church of Edith Arendrup from the beginning relied on the spiritual support of the Jesuits, known activities in the field of education. The temple and its atmosphere of spirituality is so attracted wimbledona that after a while the Church is even called "a hotbed of papism".

The interior is gorgeous. The nave is nearly twenty-meter height framed by columns, over which there are eight sculptures of the saints-the Jesuits. In 1990, the Church received a new altar, designed by David John – it fits a large statue of the virgin of Lourdes in the late XIX century. In the chapel of the sacred Heart at first housed a marble altar from domestic chapel Edith Arendrup, but in 1968 he was defeated and replaced by a new one. On the wall of the chapel is a large statue of the sacred Heart of the work of Michael Clarke, made of fiberglass.

Not long ago, the Jesuits announced the transfer of the Church of the sacred Heart Catholic Archdiocese Saleswork. As explained by the Order, its resources are now insufficient to maintain the great temple.
