The Church Of St. Leodegar (German name: Saint-Leodegar-im-Hof) - the main Church and a landmark in Lucerne. It was built from 1633 to 1639, based on the Roman Basilica, which was destroyed by fire in 1633. This Church was one of several built churches North of the Alps during the Thirty years war and one of the largest and most elaborately constructed, rich in churches belonging to the German style of the late Renaissance.
In the 8th century on the territory of the Church was the Abbey which was built on the donations of Pepin the Short, king of the Franks and was called "the Monastery Lucaria". By the 12th century the monastery was under the jurisdiction of Marbacka Abbey, the patron Saint of which was the St. Leodegar. In 1291 the Abbey was sold to the Habsburgs. In 1433, Lucerne, at that time were not more a member of the Confederation, took control of the Abbey. In 1474 the Church was converted from a convent in the parish.
The Church of St. Leodegar surrounded by an arched gallery, which built the altar of the virgin Mary, decorated preserved from the old Church plaque of black marble. But this is not the only altar of the Church – the second was consecrated in the name of the Holy spirit, and on the perimeter of the Church are statues of saints, including the statues of the patrons of Lucerne - saints Leonard and Mean. The Church façade is covered with stone carvings depicting saints, decorated with a clock.
