The mount Pinatubo is an active volcano located on the island of Luzon in 87 km from Manila. The last time the volcano erupted in 1991, although this was considered extinct since been asleep for more than 600 years. Before the eruption the height was 1745 meters, and today – 1486 meters.

In the 16th century, when on Luzon came the Spanish conquistadors, covered with a dense forest of Pinatubo was a refuge for hiding the natives from a tribe of AET.

In April 1991, scientists noticed the first signs of an approaching eruption of Pinatubo – after tremors over the top of the volcano there has emerged a column of vapor. Were immediately evacuated all cities and towns located within a radius of 20 km. the First explosion occurred on June 12, raised to a height of 19 km black ash cloud. Following the explosion, more powerful, happened 14 hours later. The biggest eruption happened on 15 June – the height of the wave was 34 km away, and thrown ashes covered the area of the sky area of 125 thousand square miles! The territory in this area for a few hours was plunged into darkness. In the future weaker eruptions occurred until June 17. Killing about 900 people, were destroyed base U.S. air force Clark and naval base of the USA. The eruption was recognized as one of the strongest in the 20th century – it got 6 points on the Richter scale.

Interesting fact: former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, a native of the province of Zambales, has named his private jet "Pinatubo". In 1957, the aircraft crashed, killing 25 people, including himself and President Magsaysay.

For the past 20 years in the Pinatubo area regularly and earthquakes, because of which the construction is impossible. Scientists believe that the volcano will soon show its temper, and the eruption may be much stronger than in 1991. Today, however, the mount Pinatubo is one of the most popular in the Philippines object of mountain tourism. In the area surrounding the volcano is a village AET representing ethnographic interest. And in the town of kapas on the way to Pinatubo, you can visit the national Monument, dedicated to the infamous Death March. Here was a camp where the Japanese during the Second World war contain thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war captured after the battle of Bataan. In this camp have died of 2,200 American and 27 thousand Filipino soldiers. The memorial consists of a Park with an area of 54 hectares, part of which is planted with trees by the number of victims. In 2003, the Park has erected an obelisk with a height of 70 meters, surrounded by black marble wall with the names of those buried military.
