State Museum of Cerralbo located in Madrid on the street Ventura Rodriguez, can be called one of the most important cultural places of the city. The building which houses the Museum was the private possession of its founder Enrique de Aguilera-and-Gamboa, 17th Marquis de Cerralbo. From a very young age, the Marquis had shown remarkable interest in the various works of art. While travelling, he bought paintings, some of which were truly priceless, Souvenirs, figurines, coins, glassware and ceramics, and more. All this formed the basis of the collection, exhibited today in the Museum of Cerralbo and more than 50 thousand exhibits, which the Marquis passed into the possession of the state along with the house.
Today visitors to the Museum of Cerralbo can admire the beautiful paintings by Spanish artists El Greco, Francisco de Zurbaran, Alonso Cano, Luis Melendez, Bartolome Gonzalez and others. Italian paintings in the Museum presents the works of Bronzino, Tintoretto, Giovanni Battista, Sebastian Ricci, and others. Besides here you can see some works of Frans Snyders and a beautiful portrait of Marie de Medici painted by van Dyck.
In addition, in the Museum of Cerralbo exhibited a magnificent collection of arms and armour, coins, ceramics, porcelain, glass etc.
The Museum opens like a door to the past, as it miraculously managed to preserve the atmosphere of the 19th century that prevailed during the Marquise de Cerralbo. Visitors are given an amazing opportunity to experience the everyday life of a noble family of Spain, second half of the 19th century.
