Plaza de españa, located directly in the center of the city, is not only the main square of Madrid and an important public transport interchange, but also the largest area in Spain, because it covers an area equal to nearly 37 thousand sq. m.

Once in place the square grew magnificent gardens. In 1656 king Charles III ordered to build a monastery, which never became operational. A century later, Joseph Bonaparte founded the stables and barracks for his army, and in the early 20th century it was decided to demolish and smash on this place area.

Madrid tower with a height of 142 meters, built between the years 1954 and 1957, is one of the highest buildings in Europe. Before the construction of the Brussels South tower in 1967, the Madrid tower was the tallest building in Europe.

In the building, "Spain", built in 1953 and consisting of 25 floors, there is a shopping centre and office space and residential apartments. Today the building is undergoing restoration.
