State Naval Museum of Madrid is located in the city center, in the building of the Main Department of the Navy of Spain. The idea of creating a Museum dedicated to the Maritime history of Spain, owned by Antonio de Valdes-Fernandez-Bazán, who served as Secretary of the naval Affairs under king Charles IV. Although the Museum was founded in 1792, for various reasons, it was opened only in 1843, when Queen Isabella II in the Palace of the Soviets on the Big street of Madrid.
The main activities of the Museum is not only to familiarize the visitors with the collections exhibited here, but also search and store new exhibits on related topics. In addition, the Museum fulfills an educational mission – after all, you can learn many new facts about the Maritime history of the Spanish state, and marine science in General.
The Museum features collections of weapons, coins, marine uniforms, model ships, nautical regalia. There is a unique vintage map of the American continent, being the oldest map of this continent. There is also a large collection of works of art relating to the Navy of Spain, from the 16th century until the present day. All the expositions of the Museum are arranged in chronological order.
Most of the exhibits were donated by him to the Royal house, the Office of Naval and Maritime services, the Royal Naval Observatory of San Fernando, the management of the seaports of Cuba and Philippine Islands, and also just the people one way or another involved in the marine business.
