Initially, this place was built a fortress by the Romans. Its ruins were used to build a new fortress in 1289, which was also destroyed. In the middle of the XV century on the foundations of old buildings was re-built fortress, which after 100 years has strengthened the Turkish commander Dragut the Corsair. In 1560, the year the Spaniards unsuccessfully besieged fortifications within three months. From the skulls of dead Spaniards inside the fortress was built an imposing pyramid – tower of Skulls. It was destroyed in 1848, and in its place erected a memorial.

In the courtyard of the fortress is Kubba Ghazi Mustafa, where a small exhibition of ceramic products.
