Ermita Photo: Hermite

The Ermita area, located between the historic Intramuros and the district of Malate in Manila, was founded in the late 16th century. The name comes from the Spanish word "La Ermita", which means "hermit shelter" because once there was built a monastery, which housed the icon of the virgin Mary. Over time, the monastery had become the Ermita Church, which was rebuilt several times. During the American colonial period, the district of Ermita, got a new life – he became known as the University district, which houses the campuses of the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, women's College of the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary and the College of St. Paul's for girls. There are also dormitories for students. The residential part of the area was populated by Americans, who founded the Club officers of the Armed Forces and Navy and University Club.

During the legendary Battle of Manila in 1945, Manila was home to some of the most terrible, bloody slaughterhouses. Wife and four children of the future President of the Philippines'elpidio, Quirino were killed here, as well as a member of the Supreme Court Anacleto Diaz. Up to 85% of the territory Ermita, were destroyed, and about 100 thousand civilian Filipinos were killed during this battle.

After the war, Manila was almost completely rebuilt. University life surged on this site. However, after decades of Hermite began to acquire fame as a "red light district" Beckoned. Former mayor Alfredo lim has done much to improve this area of town and to restore his reputation. As a result of these efforts nightlife in Ermita began to wane. However, today there are enough karaoke bars, clubs and restaurants where you can spend the night. And a day in Ermita, you can wander through the souvenir and antique shopping, walk to rizal Park or to see the local sights – the old Town Hall, the Aquarium, etc.
