Fort Drum, known as the "concrete battleship," the heavily fortified island fortress situated at the entrance to Manila Bay directly opposite the island Corregidor.
After the Americans had received from the Spanish control of the Philippines, Fort Drum was intended as a control station for mine warehouses. However, due to imperfect defense system on the territory, the plan was revised: it was decided to align the island, and then to build a concrete building, equipped with two 12-inch guns. Later the war Department decided to replace the 12-inch guns on the 14-inch, as well as set two dungeon with 6-inch guns. In addition, it was planned to enclose the fortress of concrete walls with a thickness of 7, 6 to 11 meters.
Construction began in April 1909 and lasted 5 years, during which the island of Frail was almost razed to the level of the sea, and on its surface were laid thick layers of reinforced steel concrete, which then turned into a massive structure resembling a ship. By 1916, were established on 14 – and 6-inch guns. Also mounted searchlights, anti-aircraft batteries and the section fire control. Was placed inside the dwelling to 320 officers and men, generators, command post and ammunition storage.
Right before the beginning of hostilities in the Pacific in December 1941 at Fort Drum was manned by soldiers. 2 January 1942 they had repulsed the attack of Japanese bombers. In mid-January, installed a new 3-inch gun. During February, March and April, the Fort witnessed several artillery attacks and air raids, sank several landing barges intending to attack the island Corregidor and other fortified Islands. However, in may 1942 at Fort Drum was surrendered to the Japanese, and behind him and the island Corregidor.
Only in 1945, the Fort was stormed by the Americans as part of the operation for the liberation of Manila. After heavy fighting in the air and on the sea American soldiers gained access to the roof of the Fort and were able to lock up the Japanese garrison inside. Once it was decided not to attempt to break into the Fort, and use a method that has been previously tested on Caballo island in Fort Hugs. There, the soldiers have pumped a mixture of oil and gasoline in trenches and mortar, at a distance, set it on fire with tracer bullets. At Fort Drum this mixture was filled in through the vents on the roof, and instead of bullets used remote handset. Locked inside Japanese soldiers were destroyed, and the fire lasted for several days.
After all the FORTS in the territory of Manila Bay were reclaimed American-Filipino troops, the Japanese began to retreat. The ruins of the Fort Drum with his incompetent gun towers and 14-inch guns and today visible on the surface of the waters of Manila Bay.
