Island Corregidor is a small rocky islet located at the entrance to Manila Bay, 48 km from Manila. It is sometimes called – "the Rock". The whole island is covered with lush tropical vegetation, in which especially stand out for wild orchids and other flowers. The size of the island having the shape of a tadpole, small – 6, 5 km in length and slightly more than 3 km in width.

The island's name comes from the Spanish word "corregir", which means "correct". According to one version, during the Spanish colonial period all ships calling at Manila Bay, had to stay on the island and show for inspection and repair of their instruments – hence the name "Island Corrections", which in Spanish sounds like "Isla del Corredigor". According to another version, the island served as the Spanish penal colony and was called "El Corredigor".

In the pre-Hispanic period it was inhabited mostly by fishermen, and there is no doubt that here was a base for pirates who could easily attack any vessels calling at the Bay. The Spaniards turned Corregidor in the signal post where fires were lit to alert the residents of Manila on the return of the Galleons and approaching enemies. Thus began the transformation of a former fishing village into a fortress and a place of one of the most heroic battles in the history of the Second World war.

When in 1942 the Japanese soldiers invaded the Philippines, the allied troops held on Corregidora maneuverable defense. The story goes that when Bataan was occupied on 9 April 1942, after a fierce "Butanskogo death March, Filipino and American troops retreated and Corregidora.
