Source Carolina Photo: Carolina Source

Beautiful white colonnade, built in 1869, is located right in the city centre. It protects from wind and dust the Caroline spring, the water of which is characterized by a sour taste and contains magnesium, which helps in the treatment of diseases of the genitourinary system and promotes the removal of kidney stones.

The name of the source was in honor of the most beautiful women – wives and girlfriends of Emperor Franz II – Caroline Augusta of Bavaria.

Source Carolina was opened in 1809. Initially it was called the New. Locals and resort guests paid no attention to the fact that it was difficult to approach, and still drank water from it. Soon city officials brought the source to the colonnade Rudolf. In 1811 it was restored. The work was directed by architect Josef Esch. Originally colonnade consisted only of round pavilions, crowned with a dome and decorated with Corinthian columns. Two wings was attached to it much later in 1872.

In the late nineteenth century was a large-scale renovation of this building. Instead of the wooden structure appeared iron, delicate and graceful colonnade, decorated in neo-Baroque style.

There was a time when access to the source Carolina was prohibited. The spring were taken under the canopy of the baths, which are located next door. Only guests of this establishment can drink healing thermal water from the spring Carolina. This situation did not suit very many, so the public was able to return the source to the previous place. It happened in 1929-1930. The colonnade was destroyed again at the end of the twentieth century, and then built a new one, which we can see now.
