Royal Exhibition building – a magnificent building located in the Park Carlton gardens in Melbourne, near the business centre of the city. This is the first in Australia the building, listed as a world Heritage site by UNESCO. Next to it is the Melbourne Museum, and the building of the center is part of the collection of Museum Victoria.

Royal exhibition building was built specifically to host the Melbourne international exhibition in 1880. I must say that the building is one of the few surviving pavilions, built in the 19th century to an international exhibition. The first exhibition was a great success for 8 months and it has been visited by over a million people! Behind her, in 1888, the center hosted another major international event – the exhibition dedicated to the centenary of exploration of Australia.

The building consists of a Large hall with an area of 12 thousand sq. m., and many smaller areas. A model for the huge dome was the famous dome Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.

It was in this building in 1901 was proclaimed the independence of Australia, and for 26 years after that here was the seat of the government of Victoria. During the First World war the building housed a temporary hospital during the Second army was defeated camp.

In the 1950s appeared blasphemous plans to destroy the center and the construction in its place office building. After 1979 was dismantled a large ballroom, the society has stirred up a wave of protests and campaigns in defense of the historical monument. His contribution to this was made by Princess Alexandra, cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, who visited Melbourne in 1984 and assigned to the center of the title "Royal". This was the impetus for beginning the restoration work and the transformation of the centre into the Museum. It is as a result of the public campaign for the preservation of the Royal exhibition centre, and the idea of adding it to the list of world Heritage of UNESCO, and that happened in 2004. Together with the centre under the protection of UNESCO was taken surrounding Park Carlton gardens. Today at the Royal exhibition centre offers a variety of activities such as the annual international exhibition of flowers. Interestingly, here are the final examinations of a number of schools Melbourne.
