The Church of St. John the Baptist is situated in the North-Western part of Melnik – the smallest town in Bulgaria. The local population calls the Church to be the Church of St. Yani. John the Baptist, after whom the temple is named, is one of the most revered Christian saints.
The Church was built in the XVIII-XIX centuries. The building is a two storey stone building with wooden elements – balconies, staircases, etc. the Interior of the temple is decorated with frescoes: columns painted with garlands and bouquets, the space above the iconostasis and Bishop's throne is decorated with colorful images of birds – pigeons, peacocks and other Exceptional artistic value is the iconostasis and Royal doors. The icons for the Church were written by artists Jacob and Nicholas Lazar Argirova.
St. John's Church is a historical monument of national importance and included in the group of cultural facilities reserve (open air Museum) Melnik. Currently the temple is still acting as urban Church cemetery.
