The Church of St. Nicholas of the town of Melnik, built in Medieval times, is one of the most interesting local attraction. Today this Church is in ruins, but in the near future it is planned to carry out reconstruction and rehabilitation in the framework of the PHARE program of.
The Church is located on the hill of St. Nicholas to the South of the city, a place that in ancient times was used as a sanctuary. Previously, there was a small Thracian temple dedicated to the goddess Bendida, and later, in the V century Basilica, which was destroyed probably in the sixth century. Currently scientists do not have any data allowing to unambiguously dated to the time of Church construction, however, the most common version that the building was built in the XI-XII centuries.
Unfortunately, most of the building has not survived to our days and today tourists can see only a part of the East wall and some parts of interior design. On the wall you can see fragments of frescoes, which has a high artistic and historical value. Part of mural painting was saved and is now in the Archaeological Museum in Sofia.
Adjoins the Church bell tower, which was built separately, it is located Northwest of the main building. By the way, one of the oldest Church bells in Europe once stood here. It is believed that the St. Nicholas Church was used until the nineteenth century, and in 1929 destroyed (after the Balkan wars Melnik was abandoned by the population and itaperuna affected the building of the temple).
