Monument "Girl with umbrella" at the Mikhailovsky square in Minsk was established in 2000. It is a monument to young girls and boys – victims of a terrible tragedy at the metro station "Nemiga".

May 30, 1999 on the banks of the river Svisloch was held festivities on the latest call of schoolchildren. Among the celebratory events was the concert of the band "mango-Mango". Thousands of senior pupils took to the streets of the city to celebrate the one and only holiday in my life. Many of the students wanted to go to a concert of your favorite band. Suddenly the weather rapidly deteriorated, and it rained so hard with large hail. Many girls and boys ran to a small and narrow pedestrian underpass near the metro station "Nemiga", escaping from the bad weather, where there was a terrible crush, during which 53 people died. More than a hundred people survived the crush, but received injuries of varying severity.

The whole country in those sad days wore mourning for their daughters and sons who died in a terrible stampede.

The tragedy shocked and talented sculptor of Belarus Vladimir Zhbanov. At that time, he worked on the sculpture of the girl under the umbrella, for which he posed for its decade-old daughter Masha. Originally it was planned to create a sculpture of the girl waiting for the bus at the stop, but the tragedy has changed the original intent of the artist, his sculpture was substantially amended.

Thus was created the most sad and touching sculpture of Vladimir Zhbanov – barefoot girl in a wet dress from torn by hail the umbrella. Mikhailovsky square is a popular entertainment in Minsk. Many people saw a strange sculpture of a girl with torn umbrella, but few people know that this is a spiritual response of the sculptor to the pain of the citizens of his country.

During the life of the sculptor began to circulate rumors about the unusual properties of his creations. After the death Zhbanov began to say that he knew some mystical secret and each work is endowed with special properties. So, they say that touches the girl with the umbrella will avoid accidents.
