In the border area of the Mordovian and Chuvash Republics, in the immediate vicinity of the city of Alatyr Kazan is a Key male deserts, founded in the eighteenth century.

The history of formation of the desert begins with the appearance of the wonderworking Kazan icon of the Mother of God has its source near the village of Turgenevo. In 1708, on the consecrated place was built the first wooden Church and assigned to Alatyr Holy Trinity monastery. In 1767 the old Church was replaced by a new one, also a wooden Church, and in 1806, above the Holy spring was built the first stone Church, dedicated, like the previous one in honor of our lady of Kazan. In the 1840s, the quadrangle building refectory was added, increasing the area of the temple twice. Over time, about the miraculous source gathered monastic community, officially recognized in the nineteenth century by the monastic brotherhood of the Kazan Key Hermitage. The old wooden Church near the spring was twice rebuilt, until the revolution came and the building was destroyed. In 1920-e years men's monastery was empty and most of the buildings was destroyed. The remaining part without domes and roofs, standing for more than half a century under the open sky, in ruins. One thing remained unchanged at all times - a wonderful source of overgrown trail. The spring came from all cities near and far abroad, among whom were atheists, Orthodox, and other denominations.

The second life of the monastery acquired in the mid 1990-ies. The revival of the monastery began with the restoration of the main temple, famous for its grandeur. Near the temple was re-erected the tower, in secret stone building with a house Church, and revered over the source of this chapel was built to the bath house. In our days the cloister is decorated with flower beds, a fountain, a pond, a modern building of the hotel for pilgrims. Public holidays in Kazan Key desert attracts a large number of pilgrims from all regions.
