A memorial sign dedicated to the heroes of the red banner Northern fleet who died during the great Patriotic war. The monument is located in Murmansk near the administration of Leninsky district. This is the work of architect F. S. of Taxis. A memorial sign was officially installed on October 13, 1974. This day was the feast of the thirty years ' anniversary of the defeat of Nazi troops in the Arctic.
The monument symbolizes a warship. The ensemble consists of granite rocks, the slope of a hill and tilted forward stele. Hill overgrown with trees. The stele is made of sheet metal. The sheets are joined with riveted seams. On the facade of the obelisk erected anchor hanging down. At the foot of the obelisk – step. The fence is made in the form of metal chains supported by artillery shells. Simplicity and brevity of a monument in harmony with the General appearance of the city and reflects the inner essence of a military feat.
The Northern fleet was founded in 1933 and is the youngest among the other fleets of the USSR. During the great Patriotic war, commander of the fleet was rear Admiral A. G. Golovko. During the war years, due to its location near the sea, Murmansk had a great strategic importance for the country. Through Murmansk allies delivered military supplies. That's why the feat of the heroes of Severomorsk has made an invaluable contribution to the Soviet victory over the Nazi invaders.
The actions of the sailors were consistent with the actions of other units. Many infantrymen, artillerymen and pilots were also killed in the name of bright Victory Day. For example, the exploits of sailors took place on land. Suffice it to mention the heroic defense of the Rybachy Peninsula, which then was called the "unsinkable aircraft carrier". Troops aircraft experienced difficulties because the air force of the enemy outnumbered his number and quality of technology. However, the warriors of the air force did not give up and bravely defended the city. Under the command of squadron pilot Boris Safonov, for 11 months were destroyed 39 German aircraft. They Safonov struck 25 aircraft, completing 224 of departure. At that time it was a record number. Boris Safonov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union and awarded "Gold Star".
During the fiercest fighting in the direction of Murmansk Marines of the Northern fleet landed in the region of the flank and rear of the enemy to strengthen the position of our troops. Airborne units were formed urgently from volunteers among sailors and gunners, as specialized landing parts was not. For a short time responded to the call 12 thousand volunteers.
Most fishing trawlers and their crews from the first days of the war went to fight in the sea along with other members of the Navy. Armed and augmented weapons they have also made an invaluable contribution to the victory. Many of them were killed in battle, not having returned from the Barents sea. Speaking about their exploits, it is impossible not to remember the names of heroes such as captain III rank Fedor Vidyayev, captain-Lieutenant Alexander Shabalin, Ivan Sivko and others.
In 1942, nine underwater combat ships did not return from battle. Among the Severomorsk 85 people were awarded the title of hero of the Soviet Union, three of whom were three times hero of the Soviet Union. However, in our peacetime remember about the war not as often. Only on holidays to the monument to fallen Severomorsk bring flowers.
Currently the monument is in need of restoration. Already stele need painting, and the entire monument is gradually decaying. Unfortunately, trends of modern times are not conducive to preserving the memory of the tragic war of the last century.
