Murom historical and art Museum is a Museum of the Murom region. The beginning of its creation belongs to 1918. It was first opened to visitors in January 1919. The premises of the Museum located in the House Zworykin.
From 1974 to 1989 the Museum together with other city museums of the region as a branch included in the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-reserve. Later, from 1989 to 1997 he functioned as an independent Museum unit, subject to the city Department of culture. In 1997, the Museum was registered as a municipal institution of culture, which is under the Department of culture of Murom. Since 2007 Murom Museum is located in the oblast subordination and has the status of a particularly valuable object of cultural heritage of the region (since 2009).
The Museum has a valuable historical and artistic collections, which are located in the four complexes of the buildings which are architectural monuments. The basis of the art collection of the Museum collection by famous Russian archaeologists: A. S. Uvarov and his wife P. S. Uvarova. Unique pieces of ancient art in the Museum came from various monasteries and temples. The ethnographic collection consists of items collected before the revolution N. G. Dobrynina, I. S. Kulikov, A. F. Jedynym and brought back from expeditions.
The main buildings of the Museum are the three-storey stone house with a mezzanine and small buildings of 18-19 centuries, representing the estate Zworykin (Pervomayskaya street, 4). In the building are ethnographic, historical exhibits, a collection of works of ancient art, the Depository of the Museum.
House Zworykin is the most beautiful in Murom last century merchant's mansion. Here was born and spent his early years world renowned scientist, a gifted inventor-engineer who emigrated to the United States, "the father of television, Vladimir Zworykin Kuzmich. The plaque on his house was installed in 1989.
In 1996 the Museum was to open an Art gallery (on the street Pervomayskaya, 6). She is a former City Council. In the halls of the second floor, a total area of 200 square meters, presents the best art collection of the Murom historical and art Museum, which includes the collection of West European and Russian art of the 17th-19th centuries.: drawings, paintings, porcelain and furniture. In 2000, opened the exhibition on Moscow street 13 in the Exhibition center, the area of which simultaneously allows 3-4 exhibitions. Exhibition center is located on the most busy street in one of the best merchant houses. Here is a functioning art salon and Museum shop.
Murom Museum since 1990, holds the all-Russian scientific conference called Uvarov reading (Easter week every three years); every year, organizes scientific expeditions. In addition, the Museum is constantly preparing to release popular and scientific publications, releases and information materials about Murom on the Internet and on electronic media. The main partners of the Museum are museums Poackage region (Gorokhovets, Kovrov, Vyazniki, Kasimov, Pavlovo, Arzamas, Sarov, Alexandrov).
