The peace Park in Nagasaki Photo: the peace Park in Nagasaki

The Peace Park in Nagasaki can be called a place of eternal sorrows and hopes of the world. It is a memorial under the open sky, is dedicated to the many thousands of Japanese who died on the day of the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945, and who later died from wounds and diseases caused by radioactive radiation. The total number of deaths on the day of the explosion and after it is almost 150 thousand people.

Before the bombing at the place where now is located the Peace Park, was located Rakascaa prison. 500 metres from the epicentre of the explosion was the Urakami Cathedral, from its wreckage in 1955 was collected column, which now denotes the epicenter of the tragedy. This monument is a symbol of prayer for peace.

Annually on 9 August in the Park held a memorial ceremony, during which the mayor of Nagasaki reads the Declaration of peace in all the world. The ceremony takes place at the foot of the Statue of the world – 10-meter monument, created by sculptor Antony Seibo Kitamura. The monument was erected in 1955 and is a man who with one hand points to the sky, calling to remember what happened the accident and its victims, and the other points of the world. At the foot of the monument there are always fresh flowers.

In the southern part of the Park is the fountain of the world, built in August 1969. It is dedicated to the people who remained alive after the explosion, but died after him in search of water.

In the late 70-ies of the last century in the Park it was decided to erect monuments-symbols of peace. The sculptures were donated to the twin cities and different countries in the period from 1978 (the monument to peace from the sister city of Porto, Portugal) and 2006 (the monument to Cloak the world" from New Zealand). The sculpture was donated by the Soviet Union in 1985. The monument from the us city of Saint Paul "Constellation Earth" appeared in the Park in 1992. There are also monuments from the now defunct States – East Germany and Czechoslovakia.

Close to the Peace Park are the atomic bomb Museum and Hall of remembrance of the victims of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.
