The apiranthos is a picturesque mountain village in the Central part of the Greek island of Naxos. The settlement is located about 30 km North-East of the homonymous capital of the island, at the foot of mount Fanari, at the altitude of 550-650 meters above sea level. This is one of the largest settlements on the island, and according to many travelers is one of the most beautiful and interesting settlements of Naxos with a rich history and tradition.
Peculiarities of the local dialect and traditions of Apiranthos is very similar to the mountain settlements of Crete. This led scientists to the idea that the Apiranthos and most likely was founded by immigrants from Crete (presumably in the 10th century). The first written mention of the settlement found in the records of the Italian traveler Christopher, Buondelmonti and date back to the year 1420.
