Amorgos Greek island in the southern Aegean sea, is part of the Cyclades. The island is located near the Islands of Naxos and IOS, and is the most Eastern island of the Cyclades. The area of the island is about 130 sq. km.
The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important center of the Cycladic civilization in 3200-2000 BC, as evidenced by discovered by archaeologists ruins of ancient cities, tombs and a variety of unique artifacts (some of them are now kept in the National Museum of Athens).
Amorgos is one of the most beautiful Cycladic Islands with stunning scenery and magnificent natural landscapes. Amorgos is a picturesque rocky mountains, secluded coves, beautiful beaches, azure waters of the Aegean sea, traditional villages with its typical architecture of the region and lots of interesting sights.
The administrative center of the island – town of Hora (Amorgos). It is located at an altitude of 400 m above sea level and is a traditional Cycladic village, with narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with blue shutters and windmills. Tourists usually visit the Choir's one-day visit to stroll through the streets of this picturesque old town and visit the local attractions such as the medieval castle built by the Venetians in the 13th century, the Venetian tower of Gavras (16th century) and located on its territory the Archaeological Museum. Famous town and many early Christian and Byzantine churches. Far from Chora and is the main attraction and business card Amorgos - the monastery of hozoviotissa, built directly into the rock (300 m above sea level) in the 11th century.
Resort same centers of the island are located in an incredibly beautiful Bay island's main port of Katapola (consists of three settlements – Katapola, Rachidi and Nsilocalfile) and coastal town Agile (the second port of the island). Both have fairly well-developed tourist infrastructure. In Katapola is the most interesting Church of Panayia Katapoliani and the ruins of the ancient settlement, but Agile and its surrounding area is primarily known for its stunning beaches. Special attention deserve such picturesque towns of Amorgos as Arkesini, Wrote, Collophane and Tholaria.
On the island of Amorgos were shooting the film "the deep Blue", the famous French film Director Luc Besson. After painting in the rental, the island became world famous.
