Fountain Bailey Photo: Fountain Bailey

The Bailey fountain – building both beautiful and strange. He stands right in the heart of Brooklyn, Grand army Plaza, decorating this area along with the Arch of soldiers and sailors.

Named after the fountain in honor of financier and philanthropist Frank Bailey and his wife Marie-Louise. In the late 1920-ies they gave 125 thousand dollars for the construction of the new fountain in the middle of Grand army Plaza. One there already functioned, but was dismantled in 1915 during the construction of the metro line under the square. Architect Egerton of Swartout and sculptor Eugene Savage was chosen by contest, and the work began. In 1932, the fountain was opened.

It looks very impressive, although somewhat melodramatic. It is assumed that the sculptural group represents an allegory of abundance. In the center of the stone basin – two bronze figures. Nude man and woman stand as if on the bow of the ship, and reminding about the film "Titanic", and Mukhina's sculpture "worker and collective farm girl". The figures symbolize wisdom and happiness, but if you look closely, a man and a woman is not like any wise nor happy. They stand backs to each other and look quarreling spouses. In the legs they have a naked boy holding a cornucopia.

Mysterious just looks the figure of Neptune at the foot of the pedestal. Powerful, smug, nasty Neptune with a round belly and a scaly legs opened his mouth in a scream. Two Triton on both sides of the ship struggling trumpeting in the shell.

Start of construction of the fountain coincided with the onset of the great depression. Invested whether the sculptor of some secret meaning in your work? This would imply Neptune greed, boy, hope, and a man with a woman – confusion and attempt to stand in the midst of tribulation?

However, the modern man on Grand army Plaza does not think about it. When the fountain is running, the Neptune with the Newts, as they should, half immersed in water, and the top figures in the spray from the high jets seem even romantic. No wonder the Bailey fountain is very popular among newlyweds about it often hosts wedding photo shoot.
