Kyrenia gate Photo: Kyrenia gate

Kyrenia gate was one of the three passes through the walls of a fortress, which was surrounded by the old city of Nicosia. The name of the gate was due to the fact that they began the road to Kyrenia, or Girne, also known as the city. They were built in 1562 and was one of the most honorable inputs, and therefore was called Del Proveditore, which means "Governor". However, most of this input was used by farmers and merchants, who every morning, waiting for his opening to get into the city, where they sold their goods – vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry, pottery, etc. For passing through the gate fee was collected, and it was different for those who came on a cart or in a carriage, and for those who passed on foot.

Remarkably, Kyrenia gate is many times smaller replica of the city gates of Beijing – the Creator, the architect of Savornin, designed according to the drawings of the famous traveler Marco Polo, who visited China.

In 1821, at the initiative of Sultan Mahmud II was the first major overhaul of the gate, and in the early XX century, when Nicosia was dominated by the British, the gate was almost completely reconstructed - the walls had to be dismantled to widen the entrance. To this day the gate was left arch and only the room where there was a guard. In addition, on the upper floor of the gate, you can get on the fortress wall, where a well nearby tribes.

Currently under construction is an information office for tourists, where you can learn about the most interesting places of Nicosia.
