The so-called Venetian walls – this is a Grand idea in their defensive structure of Nicosia, which was created under the guidance of Italian military engineers, Francisco Barbaro and Giulio Savorgnano. The construction, or rather the modernization of the existing fortifications, begun in 1567 almost immediately after the capture by the Venetians of that territory, and continued for several years. During this time the new owners Nicosia demolished several old palaces and churches to obtain building materials and at the same time in this way have improved the review adjacent to the village territories. In addition, the project engineers, the river Pedieos remained outside the city wall. On the one hand this was done to protect the city from future flooding, as well as to fill the river with water protective moat around the perimeter of the wall.

However, all the works of the builders were in vain – soon, namely in 1570, the city effortlessly was captured by the Ottomans, led by Admiral Lala Mustafa Pasha. Moreover, the Venetians did not have time to complete the construction of his Grand fortifications around the city.

At the moment the length of a circle-building is about three miles, and on the perimeter is located 11 bastions, having the shape of a regular Pentagon. These towers were named after famous Italian aristocratic families of Nicosia, which has allocated funds for the construction of the wall. Also has three main gates, through which it was possible to get into the city: the Port of San Domenico (Paphos gate), Porta del Proveditore (Kyrenia gate) and Porta Julian (Famagusta gate).
