The village of Copper in the Nizhny Novgorod region was established in the fourteenth century by immigrants from the territory of the Golden Horde. The name of the village comes from the Copper river Big flowing through the ancient Tatar settlement. In the early twentieth century expanded the village was a religious Muslim center with five congregational mosques. By 1952, all mosques of the Islamic villages were destroyed.
In the 1980s, the newly established Muslim community begins with the realization of the project of construction of religious and educational complex which includes a mosque, a Museum, a club, hotel and hospital. From 1992 to 1994. construction was underway on the main Rashid mosque, named after the mother of philanthropist and Chairman of the religious community f..Gulmanova. Author Muslim Shrine was the architect Ilyas Tazhiev (author mosque on Poklonnaya hill), embodied in stone the image of a flower with five petals, three of which are topped by domes. The interior (Suras from the Qur'an and floral ornament) made in white and gold. Under the mosque was organized by the regional Museum dedicated to the history of Nizhny Novgorod Tatars, with multiple exposures. Before the entrance there is a monument Ya-Sin, which represent openwork 25-meter stele with six sides, between which is attached a metal plate with a prayer dedicated to all the Muslims who died at the hands of the Soviet power. Nowadays, the Rashid mosque is the best example of modern Islamic architecture in Russia and Tatar spiritual center - a cultural heritage site of regional significance.
