The Chapel Of St. Cross in Opava is one of the most interesting architectural and historical monuments of the city. She appeared in 1394, at the direction of Prince Przemek – one of the přemyslid family. The temple is decorated in the traditional colors of the coat of arms of Opava. Its construction were used as blocks of stone and brick. The chapel has an octagonal shape and is equipped with two carved portals. It is built in a simple, minimalist Gothic style. In XV century it inside the vaults were decorated with paintings, the theme of which was connected with the upcoming end of the world. Unfortunately, because of these frescoes has been preserved a small fragment, but by the brightness of his colours, you can understand what effect these images had upon believers of that time.
In the Thirty years war the Opava was occupied by Swedish troops, which is home to the chapel of the Holy Cross, and began to hold her Protestant services. From that time to the chapel attached to the second name – Swedish chapel.
In 1785 the chapel became part of the private ownership and was used for another purpose. The new owner kept under its arches grain and other products, turned to her interiors without reverence, so not concerned about the disappearance of some of the frescoes. In 1866 the chapel of the Holy cross once again used for worship. Around her begin to bury those who died of cholera, therefore, under the arches of the temple, mostly, looking for the consolation of the bereaved families.
In the early twentieth century, it becomes clear that the city might lose the temple, if not immediately engaged in its restoration. To update interior finishes are hiring the best artists of the time.
